BLUEBEARD

is a fairy tale written or collected by CHARLES PERRAULT's (read as: sharl perow) in his book Histoires ou contes du temps passé - Fairy Tales from Past Times from 1697. Perrault was working at the court of LOUIS XIV. where, in the year 1669, he gave the king the idea for a labyrinth around the figures of Aesop's fables.

BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE

written by BELA BARTOK with BELA BALAZS in 1918 in Ungary after MARCEL MAETERLINCK's Ariane et Barbe-Bleue and figures the story of Bluebeard's forth wife Judith, which in the end will be locked in the seventh chamber.

Into the dark castle Judith comes to open the doors and let light in against the pleeding of Bluebeard to desist this enterprise. The seven rooms behind the doors have following colour scheme:

1. (The torture chamber) Blood-red
2. (The armory) Yellowish-red
3. (The treasury) Golden
4. (The garden) Bluish-green
5. (The kingdom) White (the stage directions read: "in a gleaming torrent, the light streams in", "blue mountains")
6. (The pool of tears) Darkness; the main hall is darkened, as if a shadow had passed over
7. (The wives) Silvery (stage directions: "silver like the moon")

In 1932 Balazs worked on the film The Blue Light with and for LENI RIEFENSTAHL.

Junta lives largely in solitude (except for the company of a young shepherd boy) in the tranquility of the mountains surrounding the village. She plays in the hills and woodlands, as a naive, free spirit. She is simple and innocent, but also seems something of a mystic. She loves to climb and clamber over the steep, difficult faces of local mountains.
On full moon nights, a crack in a prominent local mountain admits the moon's light and illuminates a grotto filled with beautiful crystals.
A man from the city, a painter, traveling through the village, falls in love with Junta. He follows her to the cabin she shares with the shepherd boy, and decides to stay for a while. The man speaks only German, and Junta only Italian.
Perceiving these thousands of crystals to be a source of immense wealth, the man immediately runs down to inform the townsfolk and tells them of the correct route to reach the grotto.  Rushing up to the grotto, Junta finds it completely barren of crystals. Meanwhile, the villagers and the painter are celebrating. Junta is totally devastated at this violation of the sacred grotto and of her trust in the outsider and falls to her death.

  


The Blue Light is also the name of a Fairy Tale, collected by the brother Grimm 
 – the story of a crippled soldier, who makes the princess his whore, before he marries her.

Bluebeard is also an Opera written by JAQUES OFFENBACH in 1866.
Offenbach's first Operette in 1855 had the title Orpheus in the Underworld.
